Life & StyleFashionStreet fashion in Brooklyn: Commuters pop in showstopping colors at Atlantic Terminal
- Article
Bright hues are this summer’s hottest trend in downtown Brooklyn.
Fashionistas are all embracing different shades, everything from neon pinks to vivid turquoises, and they say it’s easy to pull off.
Just be brave and have fun with it.
Tamika Albertini, Uniondale, L.I.
As a designer, Albertini is always doling out fashion advice. Her top tip?
“Dress how you feel. Don’t worry about what anyone has to say about you.”
Albertini, who calls her style eclectic and vintage, isn’t afraid to stand out.
“I like a lot of colors and a lot of patterns, whether it’s in my jewelry or my clothes,” says the 25-year-old.
She makes sure that the pieces for her line, Albertini Addiction, stand out, too. Albertini, who learned to sew at 14, runs the company with her twin sister, Tamara, a jewelry designer.
“It’s great, because we tend to think alike and we have the same ideas and same designs. Even if we disagree on something, it’s always cordial, and we take each other’s criticisms very well.”
Wendy Louis, Midwood
Louis dresses for the moment.
“I love the dress because of the color. I like that it’s flowy and comfortable and something that I can dress up and use as daywear or nightwear,” she says.
To get her maxi dress ready for an evening out, Louis would swap out her flat sandals for heels and throw on fancier earrings and bangles.
A former fashion executive, Louis, now a dietitian, still keeps up with the latest trends.
“That’s my passion,” says the 29-year-old.
While patterns and colors are important, Louis believes a good fit is crucial to looking good.
“Dress according to your body size and your mood. If there’s something you don’t feel like fits your body or you don’t feel exudes confidence, stay away from it.”

Michael Lewil, Crown Heights
Summer is the season for color, says Lewil.
“I try to have the colors that I wear flow with the seasons. In the winter, it’s more deep blues and browns. In the fall, it’s red or oranges. For summer, it’s the bright blues, pinks, tangerine oranges and yellows.”
You’ll never find Lewil, who works as a health educator at New York Presbyterian Hospital, in a straightforward shirt and pants combo.
“I like to mix it up,” he says. “I prefer to use accessories more so than buying a bunch of different outfits.”
When it comes to trends, Lewil follows Japan closely. “They have a lot of fun with their clothing. It’s a lot of their t-shirts. The way they mesh things together, I love it.”
Kimberly Burke, East Flatbush
Open Burke’s closet and you’ll find every color of the rainbow. The 22-year-old assistant teacher doesn’t have a favorite shade, but likes everything to be bright.
“I just open my closet and drawers and pick out the first thing that catches my eye.”
She shops from both high- and low-end stores, but refuses to pay a premium for trendy jewelry.
“I like to splurge on shoes and handbags, but I buy accessories from anywhere. I got this chain for $6.”
Burke often looks to her friends, who work in fashion, for inspiration, but comfort is still key when it comes to dressing up.
“I like to put everything together, so that I feel comfortable and it makes me feel happy.”
