Tom Ford: ‘Americans are too fat’

July 5th, 2011 by Sophia Bendrodt

Americans have Tom Ford seeing fat, not fashion.

At least, that’s what the designer said when asked where he finds his inspiration.

The Texas native held nothing back in an interview with Time Out Hong Kong, telling the magazine that he thinks Americans are “too fat.”

“I have to say if we have to talk about things like this, Americans are too fat. And in London, they are starting to get fat too,” he said, when asked whether or not his collection is made to fit everyone.

“I find it refreshing that everyone [who is] Chinese is slim,” he added.

Ford, who served as the creative director for both Gucci and Yves St. Laurent before starting his own label in 2005, said that while his looks can be altered to fit most women, he does keep a slim figure in mind when dreaming up new looks.

“I do design for a specific person…who’s probably thin, quite honestly. She takes care of herself.”

As for menswear? The designer said he looks to no one other than himself.

“You do design for a kind of ideal,” he said. ”The ideal comes from me, from menswear. I’m my muse.”
