A top trend for autumn/winter 2011 is the new ‘Fetish’. Fearless, bold and infused with more than a little S&M, this is not for the subtle or faint of heart. A sexual smattering of dominatrix boots, flasher macs and suspenders were just a few of the controversial pieces that were ruling the A/W runways.

A hugely directional trend, it returns every few years with a fresh twist. It is power dressing, commanding and Marc Jacobs himself explains that . He goes on to explain that a fetish can be for a particular bag or pair of shoes, an uncontrollable lust for a particular piece of fashion. It is the response to last season’s colourful, flowing and feminine seventies look; the dominatrix trend is cracking the whip with lashings of latex combined with a darker attitude and a commanding sexual presence.

On The Runways

Sex has been on the fashion agenda since the beginning of the season. In New York, House of Harlot set the stage for a fetish comeback, whilst in Paris, a much darker eroticism emerged within the Alexander McQueen and Ungaro creations. From leather to latex, the salacious fetish trend is all about exploring the different facets of a woman’s personality but how wearable is it?

The good news; very wearable! You don’t need to dress head to toe in rubber to channel the look, it translates from the runways and can be diluted to achieve a bondage inspired but subtly provocative look. The fetish trend on the catwalks may be anything but subtle, but for a ‘modern wearable fetish’, think wide, leather corset belts and high necklines.

Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, Emanuel Ungaro, Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier were just a few of the designers laying bare their fashion fantasies:
